Definition of Advertising

What
is
Advertising?
It is hard to find a satisfactory definition
of advertising.
A picturesque
way of putting it is to
call it business
imagination,
an imagination that sees in a
product possibilities which can be realized only
by appealing
to the
public in
new ways to create a desire where none existed before. It is a very
broad word,
an omnibus word conveying different ideas to different people.
No advertising
definition is here possible except as this entire article
may be
accepted as a
definition. So rapidly has advertising advanced through its various
changes
that even the latest dictionaries and encyclopedias are out of date in
their
attempts to define it. The advertising
of yesterday is not the
advertising
of
today.
Men not so very old have witnessed its entire
development from
an
untrustworthy instrument of quacks to its place as an engine in the
conduct and
expansion of business.
Advertising
in
the dictionary sense
has a
history as old as that of the human race. Just as soon as
there were
enough
people in the world, some sort of formal announcement had to be made.
The early
history of such announcements – from proclamations to the
beginning of
pictorial and lettered inscriptions, from these primitive posters to
the
discovery of printing, and from the advent of printing to the beginning
of real
advertising
– is of interest only to the
archeologist. It is
of no value to the
business entrepreneur. It would be of no assistance to understanding
modern
advertising than ancient Phoenicians coins would be to comprehending
the
principles of a modern bank.
Every attempt to secure the sale of
a product
or service is advertising. The wares of the primitive merchant
displayed
invitingly in front of his booth is advertising. A want ad, to secure
a
job or
an employee, is advertising. An inscription on a wall, the barker in
front of a
side show, the promises of an internet
marketer,
the announcement of a
new online
technology, membership in an affiliate
program,
wearing a peculiar
shirt or
distinctive sticker in
your car – all these are forms of
advertising in that
they seek to attract attention to a product or a service that is for
sale. For
a product or a service of general use, rich and poor, high and low,
men, women
and even children, must be appealed to.
At least one
principle we know of, stays
constant, not eroding with the passing of time or the use and or abuse
of men,
not concerned with the weather outside, nor considering your personal
health
status, or taking into account your surrounding circumstances, and that
is that
you have to keep doing it, it has to be fed, no way around it, it keeps
asking
for every ounce of your commitment if you expect any kind of
visible
returns.
Whatever the appropriate definition
of
advertisement is, one thing is to conclude, it is because it
has been.
And
every succeeding year since the beginning of the human entrepreneurship
it has
left its precious deposit of new ideas, better methods, larger and
swifter
efficiency, and the promise of an even greater growth.

The
Secret in Advertising
Advertising
is money.
This
has come to be recognized as a
principle in business. Competition is so
keen, and we live in such busy times, that an entrepreneur's only
chance of success lies in proclaiming the merits of his products or
services far and wide, up and down the media, and if possible globally.
He must act like the trumpeter in advance of the procession; its
business is to attract attention. He must keep showing his product or
service, the public attention must be not only sustained but also
preserved, and he who best succeeds in this has the best chance of
making a fortune in the process.
In this conviction almost every entrepreneur
advertises. It is found
not to be sufficient for the brick and mortar entrepreneur to put up a
sign over his door, or for the internet marketer
a banner in some web
page,
for people to come and look at; they must send out their signs
and banners far and wide, with the spread like idea and purpose of
infection, and makes people see it and
remember it in spite of
themselves, like a virus.
To do this effectually requires tact and knowledge. It may be done
costly and ineffective, or cheap and profitable. All depends on how it
is set about. It must be done boldly.
For entrepreneurs there is like a secret
power in
advertising.
Good advertising is nothing more nor less than good
instructive
and descriptive communication; the frank honest kind that
convinces. A successful entrepreneur should be
aware, and most probably
is, that if that communication is unnatural, unreal, or
insincere...it's dead.
To give it life, the secret
power is ...
personality.
In all good form of advertisement there is a tremendous
psychic influence; since the advertising
to be effective must be simply
incidental to the personal attachment created.
An ad of forty words should make the reader think four thousand words;
a sales letter of four hundred, forty thousand; and a few minutes
internet
video or a TV
commercial like the Oscar winning movie of the
year. That's exactly where the whole secret resides.
It
isn't what you
say, write or film that counts, but the chain of thought
which your
advertising creates.
The
obvious advice of this 'secret'
to the entrepreneur is
that if he
advertises and he wants to have a successful
advertising campaign,
he
should communicate with its prospects the same as he should
communicate
across the counter with a costumer,
face to
face...heart to heart .

The
Change in Advertising
Novelty in advertising.
The basis of the value of novelty
in advertising as
an incentive is twofold. Recall the extreme importance, in the lives of
our ancestors and in our own experience, of unusual objects, new
gadgets, new technologies, new situations, unaccustomed stimuli.
The organism is perfectly adapted to
familiar objects, but strange ones
can only set up disturbed or random responses, and hence cause the
feeling of shock. We are startled by the novel, be it physical or
intangible, be it the object or the idea as long as it is
new, full of
unexplored curiosity, unattended interest. It is full of interest to us
both on account of the danger it may contain and on account of the good
it may afford. Hence we always attend to it closely when we
discover
it. This incentive is closely related to the
instinct of curiosity.
Curiosity is merely the name for our interest in the unknown or
unfamiliar. Throw a strange object into the field and the horses and
cattle will circle around it, sniffing, poking and snorting until they
seem to have discovered all the possible sources of activity to be
anticipated from the object. If the object shows no new traits, but
behaves just as the old familiar objects in the pasture, the cattle
soon scatter away and are hereafter unconcerned about it. But if it
shows any new or unwanted characteristics, the animals are interested
in it for days and may be observed constantly examining it. The same is
true of a child with a new
toy, the teenager with the latest video
game, or the geek browsing through a sea of web pages
with new internet
technology content.
Novelty is
an effective attention
device. This also illustrates an important principle of
perception,
that one “ sees “ not so much what the sense organ
affords but rather what the present stimulus has been learned to mean.
Sensation
is supplemented by perception.
Herein lies the strong attention value
of all devices designed to arouse curiosity – bizarre
figures, cuts, shapes, flashing internet banners, to be continued t.v.
episodes, a good written sales letter, curios spelling, unusual
location or positions, catchy names, trade marks, billboards, browser
pop ups, the you are the winner e-mail or the ever present online ad
promising on how to become rich from home,
unfamiliar media, such as
balloons, window exhibitions, prize packages, contests, web blogs,
traffic exchanges, viral networks, etc.
It has been known that even churches have frequently carried on
advertising campaigns based on the novelty incentive, introducing
unheard-of specialties and stunts into the service.
Online entrepreneurs, newspapers, politicians, publishers, movie
studios, dealers in every commodity, machinery, etc., uses this
incentive to advantage. The element of novelty attracts the attention
initially, and, if the thing is sufficiently curious, the observer is
likely to keep his attention fixed until the advertisement has been
thoroughly digested.
If possible, the novelty should be intrinsic, not simply obtruded as an
attention device.
A good example of effective and intrinsic novelty is
the assertion made once by the old and celebrated
advertisement of
3-in-1 Oil : “ Men shave with it.” It was a clear
attempt to employ the novelty device for purposes of
attention.
The chief
danger in using the novelty
incentive is, of course, that of emphasizing the novelty rather than
the product.
So advertisers should be advise, since the introduction of novelty
in
advertisement, evidently also introduces the applicable
warning of past
results do not guarantee future performance.

First, you must have a strong WHY.
Why MUST you have a successful
home business? What is driving you? What
is it that you CAN'T have in your life anymore and/or what is it that

For me, I couldn't stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and missing
the experience of my children growing up. I also absolutely HAD TO HAVE
the freedom of being able to control my life and finances through a
little box (laptop computer) that I could carry with me anywhere in the
world and not be tied to anyone's time pressures or demands
but my own.
That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a great pain deep in my gut of
missing out on my children's lives and the incredible freedom that
succeeding in a home based business would provide for me. I found my
why. You MUST find yours.

You must BELIEVE that it is possible.
If you don't believe that it's POSSIBLE for you to have a successful
home based business or make your living from home, you won't. It's that
simple.
For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of
realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money working
from home. If they could do it, I could too. It
would just be a
matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then adapting
it to my situation.
There is no shortage of undeniable PROOF that people (millions of them)
are making money working from home. Just get online
and do some research and you'll find countless testimonials
and stories
of REAL PEOPLE making real money on the Internet. Or head to your local
bookstore and you'll find the same documented evidence of this fact.
Truth is, it's getting easier and easier to make money with
your own
home based business.
I've always said that "affiliate marketing" (a simple way to make money
from home) is the job of the future. In the
"old" days, you had to go to a potential employer, apply for the
position and hope for the best. Now you can simply go to any
company
you want, fill out their affiliate application and start work
immediately. Affiliates are the new working class. In fact, making

WAY MORE than possible. It is pretty much (or will be soon enough)

You must be willing to MAKE THE LEAP.
Ready, FIRE, then aim... This is the operating philosophy you MUST

The beginning, whether a single paragraph in form, or a single

impression.
The conversation, the incident, the example, or the summary of which it
consists, should be complete in itself. Unless, on the other hand, the
introduction is an organic part of the article, it fails of its purpose.
The beginning must present some vital phase of the subject; it should
not be merely something attractive attached to the article to catch the
reader's notice.
In his effort to make the beginning attractive, an inexperienced article writer is
inclined to linger over it until it becomes disproportionately long.
Its length, however, should be proportionate to the importance of that
phase of the subject which it presents.
As a vital part of the article, the introduction must be so skillfully
connected with what follows that a reader is not conscious of
the
transition.
Close coherence between the beginning
and the article body is essential.
The four faults, therefore, to be guarded against in writing the
beginning are;
- The inclusion
of diverse details not carefully coordinated to produce a single
unified impression;
- The
development of the introduction to a disproportionate lenght;
- The failure to
make the beginning a vital part of the article itself;
- The lack of
close connection or of skillfull transition between the introduction
and the body of the article.
TYPES
OF BEGINNINGS.
Because of the importance of the introduction, the article writer should
familiarize himself with the different kinds of beginnings, and should
study
them from the point of view of their suitability for various types of
articles.
The seven distinct types
of article beginnings are:
(1) summary;
(2) narrative;
(3) description;
(4) striking statement;
(5) quotation;
(6) question;
(7) direct address.
Combinations of two or more of these methods are not infrequent.
SUMMARY
BEGINNINGS.
The
general adoption by print and online media of the summary beginning, or
"lead," for articles and news stories has accustomed the average reader
to finding most of the essential facts grouped together in the first
paragraph.
The lead, by telling the reader the nature of the event or topic, the
persons and things concerned, the time, the place, the cause, and the
result, answers his questions, What? Who? When? Where? Why?
How?
Not only are the important facts and issues summarized in such a
beginning,
but the most striking detail is usually "played up" in the first group
of words
of the initial sentence where it catches the eye at once.
Thus the reader is given both the main facts and the most significant
feature of the subject. Unquestionably this article and news
story
lead, when skillfully worked out, has distinct advantages alike for the
news report and for the home
business article.
Let
the final objective remain clear, the article is just the tool used to
attract attention to the business, the seed for extra income and one
step in the direction of reaping financial
freedom.
By
applying the methods outlined in the preceding paragraphs, online business entrepreneurs
and ordinary work
from home people alike have been able to prepare and
submit articles that have been accepted by many newspaper, magazine
editors, article directories; and search engines. The success that
these online
entrepreneurs have achieved leads the author to believe

etc, which may very well deceive any regular person. Less of a mystery
and more of a clogged artery in reference to the obstruction of success

be obtained by those who aspire to greater achievement and wealth. This
knowledge is crucial to those working from home
entrepreneurs who are now circumscribed simply
because
they are ignorant as to forward and backward movements of the
advertising lever that opens and shuts financial valves at just the
right time and puts the pressure where it belongs, and without an
appreciable loss of power.
Nevertheless
it remains almost certain that every online
business entrepreneur
and advertising student will agree that while the home
business dollars don’t come easy through this
inexact science, even so a famous phrase has to be
maintained in
constant thought: a business with no sign, is a sign of no
business.

advertising analysis along lines wholly different from those

Working from
Home is one of the hottest themes of the
hour. This reachable dream has become highly contagious and

The topic obviously has many

written about the potential, the opportunity, the idea, and the vision
of the Home Sweet Home based Business.
Every kind of media, but specially the internet
and the online community in general has its daily dosage of exposure to
the ever increasing brand names and gurus of the industry.
It’s a phenomenon that easily hypnotizes any viewer that has
the slightest predisposition. And the vast majority of the spectators
of this worldwide show seem to belief, or at least want to accommodate
the belief, that the road to richness is a short and straight one. The
notion that anyone subscribing to one of the many online
business opportunities available is going to
become a millionaire overnight is based on a misconception of what the
business is. In reality, nothing is further away from the truth.
This brings the instance to make mention of the
mania in this age, at a worldwide level, for notoriety in social life
as well as in the possession of wealth, without omitting the startling
fact that everybody is expecting it now, not tomorrow.
The ceaseless popping up of advertising regarding get
rich now and become an instant millionaire
opportunities could be easily be considered the vehicle of it,
sometimes the occasion, but not the cause. The home
business may have fostered–it has not

Maybe the time has come for a more

arise if the time has come, is it near at hand, or is already passing,

based Business Entrepreneurship”?
The Home based Business
is not a willful creation, nor an isolated phenomenon, but the
legitimate outcome of the employment situation,
working environment and financial status of our society, as much as
our system of popular wealth and money
education. Trust is left for some competent observer that hopefully
will make, perhaps for this association a philosophical study of it.
The idea remaining here is a much humbler one.
It is the sweet thought that it may not
be unprofitable to treat the work from home
business from a practical and even somewhat
mechanical point of view.
